While teaching at Catch the Fire School of Ministry in Toronto, I had the opportunity to conduct a written survey of 47 questions which were answered by 102 church attendees who had made soaking a part of their lifestyle.

Below is a summary of the results of the survey

  1. More than 2/3 self-identified as “right brain” (“More visual/intuitive” while less than 1/3 identified as “left brain” (More analytical/logical).
  2. Soaking time varied from 1 hour per week to 1 hour per day.
  3. When asked if they could feel, hear, and see God as they soaked
    • About half felt Him most of the time, while others felt Him some but not necessarily most of the time
    • About half heard Him often, while others heard Him either most of the time or less than often.
    • About half saw Him seldom, while others saw Him more often than seldom.
    • Summary: Feeling was strongest, hearing next and seeing was weakest.
  4. The largest percentage laid down to soak, while others either sat or fell down.
  5. Changes in their lives that remained:
    • Increased passion for God 97%
    • Purification of heart attitudes 96%
    • Greater peace 96%
    • Greater love 96%
    • Greater joy 94%
    • Greater spiritual energy 90%
    • Greater creativity 81%
    • Greater ongoing revelation 88%
    • Greater sense of destiny 85%
    • Improved relationship with God 98%
    • Improved relationship with others 93%
    • Improved physical health 72%
    • Improved emotional health 95%
    • Improved spiritual health 93%
    • Knowledge of what God is doing 98%
  6. Right-brainers consistently scored higher on feeling, seeing, and hearing than left-brainers.
  7. Overall, I would say “soaking” was considered a very beneficial spiritual experience.

Reflections

  1. Left brainers especially (but right brainers also) would likely experience more if they were instructed to be intentional about tuning to flowing thoughts, flowing pictures, and flowing emotions (as flow is the key way the Spirit is sensed - Jn. 7:37-39).
  2. Perhaps instructing people to begin by seeing themselves together with Jesus in a comfortable setting would cause people to see more visions thus enhancing their experience. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words. I recommend trying out the free download, Sea of Galilee, which is a visualized walk with Jesus.
  3. There is no need for anyone in the body of Christ to criticize soaking as it has many benefits.
